Hand smock headings

Hot off the work benches, this sample of a hand smocked heading is for a client who’s brief is for a moveable fluid smocked heading to be used on draw curtains that must also be lined and interlined. Our challenge is that normal techniques result in the heading being rigid, and therefore suitable only for fixed headings such as pelmets or static headed Italian strung curtains. We have removed a layer of interlining and replaced the cotton webbing tape (that the first stage pleats are stitched to prior to smocking) with a fine gauze to produce an altogether more pliable heading that will bend and stack back. This sample has been prepared in a soft slub linen with domette interlining and cotton sateen lining and with brass sew on hooks to the reverse for hanging from a pole and rings.
